It looks like I have the only Halo 2 server hosted by AoWC at the moment, so I'll post everything I know about it to help people.
System Requirements -Windows Server 2003 (without Active Directory installed. i.e. don't run it on a domain controller) or -Windows Vista Installing the server -Insert the Halo 2 DVD-ROM and select the option to install the dedicated server. Install the dedicated server to a directory of your choosing. -Install the latest patch for the game (even though it says the patch is for the game, it will also update the dedicated server) The patch can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/games/halo2/ then click on Support -Install the latest Games for Windows redistributable. http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US...s/default.aspx Configuring the server Once the server is installed and updated, you must decide if it's going to run as an application or as a Windows service. -To run as a service, open a Windows command prompt as an administrator and navigate to the directory where the dedicated server program is installed. Then type h2server -createservice -live This will create a Windows service called "Halo 2 Dedicated Server" and a local user account called H2Server -Log off Windows and log back in. -Open the Computer Management console and verify the Halo 2 Dedicated Server service is started and running. A Halo 2 Live server requires two more things: a CD key for Halo 2, and a Games for Windows Live / Xbox Live account. -Once again open a Windows command prompt and navigate to the directory where the dedicated server program is installed. Type h2admin -live to run the server administration program. The command prompt will now change to h2server$ -Next enter live key 12345-12345-12345-12345-12345 replacing 12345 etc with an actual CD key. This will return the conformation "Product key set." if entered correctly. Now to setup the Live account and sign-on the server to the network. You should have an e-mail address with an Xbox Live account/gamertag associated with it. At the command prompt enter: live autosignin emailaddress@hotmail.com you will be prompted for your password twice. If you entered your login correctly it will say "Automatic sign-in enabled." To check the status of your server, type status at the command prompt. It should return something like the following: Network mode: LIVE Current state: online - pregame lobby Sign-in: emailaddress@hotmail.com (Automatic) Name: Gamertag Playlist: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Server\example.hpl Custom map folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Server\Custom Maps Playing Phantom Fodder on Elongation. Next: Crazy King on Sanctuary. No players present. ------------------------------ -If the "Current state" line says offline, then the server is not signed in to the Live network with a Games for Windows Live / Xbox Live account. -If the "Current state" line says offline - invalid product key, then you did not enter a valid CD key. Some other things I've noticed:
-The server name will be your Xbox Live gamertag. -You need to use a Live gold account. A free silver account will not let you sign the server into the Live network. -There is no way I can find to connect to a server using its IP address. You must select it by name in the Live Games Browser in Halo 2. -If only the dedicated server is installed, the game patch will not update it (nice going Microsoft). If the game and the dedicated server are installed, the game patch will update both. To update the server files when only the dedicated server is installed: you must install the game and the server on another computer, run the game patch, then transfer the updated server files to your server-only installation.
